From 1 October 2009 the Valuation Office are writing to each individual rate payer throughout England and Wales notifying them of the new Rateable Value of their property for the 2010 Rating List.
The 2010 Rating List takes effect from 1 April 2010, based on rental values in 2008, and the key dates for your diary are as follows:-
30 September 2009
Valuation Office publishes online the new Rateable Values with hard copy versions sent out in the weeks after.
February/March 2010
The Local Authority uses the new Rateable Values to calculate the business rate bills in 2010/2011 for the financial year.
1 April 2010
The new Rating List comes into effect and lasts for five years.
It is cricual to remember that the 2010 Rating List lasts for five years, and therefore it is imperative that your Rateable Value is as low as possible so you are not over paying for the next five years!!
Fisher Hargreaves Proctor would be delighted to act on your behalf to challenge your new assessment and where possible, pre-agree a reduction from those proposed figures that will be announced in October to have the best possible impact on your cash flow come 1 April 2010.
